Nel mese di maggio gli scienziati registrano un aumento dell’attività solare sotto forma di bagliori (provocati da espulsioni di plasma) che potrebbero disturbare l’atmosfera nel livello in cui viaggiano i segnali GPS e le comunicazioni satellitari. Ciò provocherebbe un’interruzione dei segnali radio fino a quando il flare sarebbe in corso, sprigionando tempeste geomagnetiche con effetti significativi sulle grandi reti elettriche ed informatiche.
